Last year, our gap year placement, Laura, caught up with Marjory who volunteers here on the Gowanbank team. Watch the video to hear about what Marjory is involved in at the centre, why she came to volunteer and what she loves most about it.
Hi, my name is Laura and I’m here at Gowanbank with one of our lovely volunteers. Do you want to introduce yourself? Hello, my name is Marjory. I live in Prestwick. I just moved there with my husband in March and I have been involved in Scripture Union since I was at secondary school. Now, that’s now over 50 years ago – that’s a long time!
Great! And what did you do here at Gowanbank pre-covid? I would get a list of activities from Sylvia. I would check my diary, see when I was free and then find out about the group. I would plan a menu. I would then buy everything, come to Gowanbank and I would prepare that meal. It might be for just a group who’s here for the day, it might be for a few days or for the weekend, it just depended what was required.
How often are you at Gowanbank? Well, pre-covid I was at Gowanbank very regularly. Obviously, since then, it’s been a bit more sporadic. However, things are picking up – not residential activities but day activities – and so I’ve got quite a few dates booked in for May and June which I am really looking forward to doing.
Sounds great – I’m looking forward to them as well. So, why did you come and volunteer at Gowanbank? Well, the reason is I think Scripture Union is a wonderful organisation. It reaches out to children, to young people and it has been so instrumental in leading young ones to Christ. Obviously, it does a lot a lot of other things with marvellous resources and so on. So I do think it’s a wonderful organisation and if I can support in any way then I’m more than happy to do that.
Great! I feel like you might have answered this question but what is your favourite part about volunteering at Gowanbank? Well, actually, I think there’s a few favourite parts. I do actually like the planning and the preparation – I do enjoy the challenge of that. I enjoy working in the kitchen with a team of people. I enjoy meeting lots of new people and quite honestly there’s just nowhere like the kitchen if you’re going to have good fun as well. So, there’s lots of laughs in the kitchen as well as working hard.
Yeah, pretty much sums it up. What would you say to people considering coming to volunteer at Gowanbank? Well, I would say definitely come! It’s a wonderful place. You’ll receive a very warm welcome. There’s lots of different ways that you can serve here but you will be given lots of support and you’ll find it very worthwhile. I think that’s one thing I would say, I find it a very worthwhile thing to do and I would definitely say come because you will love it.
Yeah, there’s loads to do here – you can do anything from any of your skill sets. We’ll find a position for you to do and if you’d like to get involved just get in touch with us – it would be great to have you.
We couldn’t do the work we do at Gowanbank without the support of our amazing team of volunteers. If you would like to get involved and support the work of Gowanbank, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you – whether you know exactly how you’d like to help or you’re open to getting stuck in wherever there is a need, give us a call or send us a message.
